I happen to own a Surfoplane too. These are being made again here in Australia and only cost $99.95!
These heavy rubber surf mats were invented by a Dr Smithers in 1933 and were ubiquitous at Australian Beaches during the 50s & 60s. They were available in various forms including this Advance Marlin model with twin fins ridden by Nick Carroll as late as 1969.
They were superseded in the 1970s by Coolites (remember how well they could remove the skin from your chest), canvas surf mats and Zippy boards too apparently.
This link probably provides the definitive history of the development and demise of the Surfoplane and Peter Bowes also wrote a great piece here.
